American Cowboy: Westcliffe’s the “Best Small Town in the Rockies”

For those of you who don’t subscribe, American Cowboy Magazine is a slick, full-color publication with circulation close to 100,000, and readership well over that figure. Reader demographics look like a wish list for the American economy, with high income, home ownership and plenty of spending on travel.

Well, it seems that the editors have visited Custer County, and discovered it is one of the best kept secrets in the whole state. They were so impressed, they voted Westcliffe the “Best Small Town in the Rockies” in their April/May issue. Wow! That’s quite an accolade, but it’s nothing folks like you and me, who live and visit here, didn’t already know.

How do you beat a town and a county where you’re surrounded by beautiful mountains, enjoy the great outdoors right at your door step, and have more cattle than people as neighbors? How many places can say there are 9 ranching families that trace their history in the county back over 100 years? And how many places can combine all that with great shopping, dining, lodging and the kind of spiritual uplift that comes from looking every day at five 14,000 foot peaks all in one place?

People sometimes ask, “Why do you live way up there?” I always tell them:

“Hey, just look out the window. If you want entertainment, we have festivals galore: Bluegrass music, Western music, Shakespeare, movies, live theater and rodeo. You can jump on an ATV in the summer or a snowmobile in winter, and ride right out your driveway. You can fish, hunt or hike and rarely visit the same place twice.”

Sometimes I wish American Cowboy would keep our secret, but most of the time I’m so happy to be in Bull Domingo, I’m willing to share it with others. This is a great place with great people who look out for each other and understand the value of living in the best kept secret in Colorado.
